The buzzing streets of Barcelona have temporarily gone quiet in the wake of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. While we miss the lively atmosphere of evenings out on the town, we know supporting our community means something we’d never expected: staying indoors. With our usual ethos of embracing our neighbours and loved ones, quarantine is an unfamiliar concept. You may be wondering, where does the word “quarantine” come from?
The word “quarantine” dates back to 14th-century Europe. It comes from the phrase quaranta giorni, which means “40 days” in Italian. During those days, monarchies often passed decrees to keep people suspected of carrying diseases in temporary isolation. They did so to protect coastal cities from potential epidemics. For example, ships arriving in Venice from infected ports were required to wait 40 days before disembarking. It seems as though we’ve found ourselves in the same boat as those 14th-century Vene-tian sailors, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun during isolation.
With our community in mind, we’ve created a list of coronavirus quarantine ideas for making the most of your time indoors. Keeping busy with these fun activities and resources will help you stick with routines, stay healthy, and feel productive despite the limitations you face.
